Body Piercing & Jewellery - Care

BODY JEWELLERY

***

Care

***

There is always much discussion on what the right way is, to care for your body jewellery. It also depends on whether the piercing is fresh or healed, the type of jewellery you have, whether its in place or loose.

The main reason however, for being ever vigilant with the care of your body jewellery, is to ensure that there is little or no opportunity for infections to develop.

Infections can and have often been traced back to water, disinfectant and soap residue, so even though you think you know what's correct, it is always best to undertake more research on this subject to stay informed on what the latest info is.

It is vitally important to consider NO body jewellery to be sterile - no matter where you buy it.

For your own piece of mind, use antibacterial soap such as Sapoderm or anything similar, and water.  Wash and rinse thoroughly and you should be good to go! If you own a vibrating tongue bar, remember to remove the batteries first, and then screw up again tightly. Do not immerse the 'vibrating' top part in water, just wipe it down with a soapy (Sapoderm) swab and again, rinse thoroughly.

Do not use Alcohol wipes or Body Piercing Sprays on Acrylic - it will cause it to become brittle and break. You must also take care with Anodized Titanium or Gold Plated items in pools, spas or to be in close, extended contact with chemicals. These will cause the items to lose colour and lustre, and even loosen gems. Remember that shampoo also contains chemicals so when washing your hair, if it's not possible or feasible to remove your jewellery, just ensure it is well rinsed.

For tongue jewellery, keep in mind that barbells can be affected by ingested chemicals such as toothpaste, alcohol, mouthwash, cigarette smoke, food and/or drinks. Your own mouth also contains it's own acids and these can also affect the look of your barbells, particularly metals. The affect will also be different from person to person.

To prevent thread stripping, do not overtighten the balls on any body jewellery. This is particularly important when using Acrylic balls.

Healing Issues

***

Only touch your fresh piercing with cleanly washed hands - that goes for anyone who wants to 'have a look' .

If yours is a genital piercing, sex should be avoided for at least a week. If uncertain, your piercer will give you more info on this as some piercings can take longer to heal.

Avoid swimming until your piercing is healed. Contaminated water can be responsible for nasty infections.

Never insert non sterile body jewellery into your piercing - even if it's healed.

Never share body jewellery with friends - even if the piercing is healed.

Never allow other people's body fluids to come in contact with fresh piercings.

Blood-Borne Infections

***

Good reasons for finding a reputable, professional piercer are numerous, none of which is more important than the piercer's guarantee of sterile premises and equipment.

AIDS/HIV

HIV is the virus that results in the disease known as AIDS. It is transmitted through blood-to-blood contact and sexual activity. If equipment used in body piercing  has not been properly sterilized prior to use, and is contaminated with infected blood, the risk of transmission of the virus to you is greater. People are infected for life. As yet there is no vaccine or cure.

HEPATITIS B

This visus can result in long-term illness affecting the liver. It is transmitted by blood-to-blood contact and by sexual activity. A safe, effective vaccine is available.

HEPATITIS C

This virus is carried in the blood and can result in long-term illness affecting the liver. The equipment used in body piercing can pose a major risk of transmission of Hepatitis C if contaminated with infected blood. There is NO preventative vaccine.

BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

There are numerous infections that can be spread through poor hygiene practices, such as poor body artist standards or by you not following the aftercare instructions given. At worst they can be life threatening.

When to see a Doctor

***

At the first signs of infection, make an appointment to see your Doctor.

Don't wait until pus develops or your jewellery can't be removed.

Continued pain is also an indication that infection may be imminent.

Do be aware though, that you may experience tissue rejection which means the piercing site may swell, the skin colour changes and the area becomes itchy. This is different from infection, where this is pus and usually pain.

What to Expect from your Piercer

***

Your piercer should:

Maintain a clean and tidy, well lit studio with Council/Health Department permits/certificates on display.

Ask if you have any metal or chemical allergies.

Wear new disposable gloves for your procedure and should not touch anything after that, other than your skin and the equipment required for the piercing.

Use sterile equipment - can you see an Autoclave Steriliser?

Has everything that is used to penetrate your skin is in sterile, sealed bags that are opened in your presence.

Throw any needle used, straight in the 'sharps' bin after use.
