information about the creatures that form our logo ....
QUETZAL BIRD ... (Pharomachrus mocino) A Central American bird
that has brilliant bronze-green and red plumage and, in the male, long flowing tail feathers.
Sacred quetzal feathers were worn by Maya kings and valued more highly than gold. The bird is still revered in Guatemala, where about 60 percent of the native population has Maya ancestry; the country calls its national currency the quetzal. But the quetzal does not take well to captivity, and it is nearing extinction because of the rapid destruction of its cloud forest habitat.
Quetzals are individuals; each sounds a little different. There are also regional differences to their calls.
BILBY ... (Macrotis lagotis)
The Bilby is an important part of traditional indigenous culture in the deserts of Central Australia. The large rabbit like ears of the Greater Bilby (referred to as Bilby) have also made it a popular Australian icon at Easter. Sadly, through habitat loss and competition with introduced animals, the number of these small mammals has dramatically reduced over the last 100 years.
While there are many threats contributing to the dramatic decline of Bilby populations, the most important of these are habitat loss and change, and competition with introduced animals.
