The Famous Pub Sign Art Collection
The Famous Pub Sign Art Collection began centuries ago in
Britain where
home drinking became 'public' drinking as some houses became
'public'
houses and then the pub developed as a separate social
building and the
host and hostess became the landlord and landlady. The pub
grew into a
institution in Britain and has developed into a unique social
concept
throughout the world. When Richard II made signs for pubs
compulsory in
the 14th Century he began a vast open air museum with picture
stories
related to an almost endless variety of subjects.
Many thousands of pub Sign names and images have been created
over the
years but this special collection of 60 famous signs includes
some of the
most colourful and popular of all. Most picture story
concepts are
represented including monarchy and heraldry such as the Kings
Head and the
Rose & Crown, while others such as Sherlock Holmes
and Jack the Ripper
portray some of the famous and infamous historical characters
that abound
in fact and fiction. Representing intrigue, sport, animal
humour and
London's unique history itself are names like 19th Hole,
Cricketers,
Drunken Duck, Pig & Whistle, London Tavern and
Beefeater to name but a
few. Together they provide a broad cross-section of famous
signs and
through them a chronicle of British history.
The Famous Pub Sign Art Collection is widely recognised
throughout the
world as a special collection of art with something of appeal
to almost
everyone.
Cheers,
MyownPub
