TOPS

BUST: The most important measurement is the bust measurement. Taken from one underarm seam across to the other and then doubled.

LENGTH: Taken from the shoulder seam to the hem.

WAIST: These days most tops don't have a waist section but if they do, the measurement is taken at the narrowest point of the body.

HIPS: This measurement is take from the widest section of the body or along the hemline for shorter tops

SLEEVE LENGTH: The length of sleeves are determined by measuring from the shoulder seam to the hem.

SLEEVE WIDTH: If neccessary, this measurement is taken approx 10cm down the sleeve from the shoulder seam.

DRESSES

BUST, WAIST, HIPS AND LENGTH AS ABOVE

Other measurements may include;

The under bust measurement for dresses that have a gather under the bust such as Empire line dresses or a measurement above the bust for strapless dresses

the width at the hemline for very flared dresses;

length from waist to hem;

length of body from shoulder to waist;

and the length from the top of the bust to the hem for dresses with adjustable straps as a measurement from the shoulder to the hem may not be very accurate.

PANTS, JEANS & SKIRTS

WAIST: Taken around the waistband which may or not sit at the waist. Usually the waistband sits between the waist and the hips but the measurement is still referred to as the waist measurement.

HIPS: Taken at the widest part of the body section which is usually around the base of the fly.

LENGTH: From the waistband to the hem

RISE: The length between to crotch seam and the waistband to give you an idea of how high on the waist a garment will sit.

LEG LENGTH: Taken from the crotch seam to the hem.

THIGH or LEG WIDTH: taken approx 10 cm down at the thigh section of pants and jeans

HEM WIDTH: a measurement taken across the hem of a skirt or pants to give an indication of the flare.
